Shared expenses, settled.

Ledger keeps track of who paid for what and who owes whom, for the flat, the trip, and anything split more than once. No running total in anybody’s head, and no spreadsheet nobody updates.

Coming to the App Store. Ledger is in testing on iPhone right now.

Built to be right, not just quick

Most of this is arithmetic nobody wants to do twice. All of it is the kind that is quietly wrong in a group chat.

  • Six ways to split

Evenly, by exact amounts, by percentage, by shares, by itemised receipt lines, or evenly with an adjustment for one person.

  • Balances that are always right

Nothing is stored as a running total. Every balance is recalculated from the expenses behind it, so editing one from last week fixes everything it touched.

  • Fewest possible payments

Four people owing each other in a circle is six transfers. Ledger nets them down and shows you who actually has to pay whom.

  • Receipts scanned on your phone

Photograph the bill and the expense fills itself in. The scanning happens on the device, so the image is never sent anywhere to be read.

  • Any currency, counted properly

Yen have no decimal places and dinars have three. Ledger uses each currency's own units, so a split never gains or loses a cent to rounding.

  • Settling up takes two

Mark a payment and the person receiving it confirms or disputes it. Nobody can quietly clear a debt they owe you.

How it works

Three steps, and the first one takes about fifteen seconds.

  1. Start a group

A flat, a trip, or nobody at all: a split between two people needs no group. Add the others by name; they do not need Ledger yet.

  2. Add what you spend

Type it, or photograph the receipt and let it fill itself in. Say who paid and how it divides. Ledger keeps the arithmetic.

  3. Settle up

See the fewest payments that clear everything, pay however you normally do, and mark it. The other person confirms it landed.

Questions people ask first

Does Ledger move money?
No. Ledger keeps the record of who owes whom; you pay each other however you already do. It can hand you off to Venmo or PayPal with the amount filled in, but opening that link is not a payment. The settlement is only recorded once you say you sent it and the person receiving it confirms.
Does everyone in the group need the app?
No. You can add someone by name and split with them straight away, then send them an invite whenever you like. Their share of everything they were part of is waiting for them when they join.
Is there an Android version?
Not yet. Ledger is an iPhone app today. Everything on the server is already shared, so an Android build does not change anyone's data when it arrives.
What happens to a photo of a receipt?
It is read on your phone, not on a server. iOS does the text recognition on the device, and only the amounts you keep become part of the expense. The image itself is stored with the expense so you can look at it again.
How long does an invite link last?
Fourteen days. It also stops working as soon as it has been used once or the person who made it cancels it. Anyone in the group can make a new one at any time.
Can I delete my account?
Yes, from inside the app, and it deletes the account rather than hiding it. What happens to expenses other people can still see is set out on the data deletion page.

Stop keeping score in your head

Add the first expense and Ledger takes it from there.
