What to put in a report

• What you were doing, and what happened instead.
• The group it concerns, and the date and amount of the expense or payment.
• Whether it happened once or happens every time.
• Your phone, and which version of iOS or Android it runs.

Do not send an invite link, or a screenshot with one in it. Anyone holding an invite link can join that group.

Common questions

Why do the balances always agree with the expenses?

Ledger never stores a balance. Every figure is worked out from the expenses and payments behind it at the moment you look, so there is no running total that can quietly fall out of step with the ledger it came from.

I paid someone back. Why is it still marked pending?

A payment is confirmed by the person who received it, never by the person who sent it. Until they confirm, it sits as pending. A pending payment already counts towards the balances, so nobody is left owing twice while it waits. If they say it never arrived they can dispute it, which puts the debt back.

Can I split with someone who does not have Ledger?

Yes. Add them to the group by name and you can split with them straight away. When they sign up and accept an invite, their account joins to that same member, so everything already split with them stays exactly as it was.

Where is my receipt read?

On your phone. Ledger uses the text recognition built into iOS and Android, so the words on the receipt and where they sit are worked out on the device, and only that text is sent to be turned into line items. The photograph itself is stored so you can check it against the expense later.

Why is my third of $10.00 not $3.33?

Amounts are held as whole units of the currency and never as decimals, so a split has to come out to the exact total. Ten dollars between three people is $3.34, $3.33 and $3.33, and Ledger shows that rather than hiding the odd cent. Who carries it moves from one expense to the next, so it evens out.

Why does Ledger suggest I pay someone I never split with?

Simplified balances reduce a group to the fewest payments, which can route what you owe through somebody you never shared a bill with. The arithmetic is right even when the arrangement looks odd, so any balance can be opened to see the expenses it came from. New groups start with simplification off.

Can one group hold more than one currency?

Yes, and amounts in different currencies are never added together. You see one figure per currency and settle them one at a time. Ledger holds no exchange rate, because inventing one would misstate what is owed.

My invite link does not work.

Invites last 14 days, and stop working once they have been accepted or cancelled. A link that was cut short by the app it was sent in will not work either. Ask whoever sent it for a new one.

How do I delete my account?

From your profile in the app. It removes your profile and your sign-in, and you will not be able to sign back in. The expenses and payments you shared with other people stay where they are, so nobody else’s balances change when you go. The data deletion page has the detail.

Can I get my data out?

A group can be exported as CSV or JSON from its spending screen in the app, with amounts written as ordinary decimals rather than the whole units Ledger stores.
